Help Others Uncover and Overcome Mental Health Barriers

In many ways, mental health is the foundation for overall health and wellbeing. But for many people, mental and behavioral health is overlooked or ignored. For others, the impact of mental health challenges can become overwhelming and prevent them from living full and happy lives.

Mental health counselors help people overcome these barriers to positive mental wellbeing. If you are already working in a human services field, and want to upgrade your skills to include mental health counseling, this program may be right for you.

This program is for paraprofessionals who are already working in the human services field. It will give you the education you need to update your skills and prepare for further career advancement. From here, you could begin work in an entry-level mental health role.

The human services A.A. degree program – behavioral health area of concentration is for students who:

  • Want to qualify for entry-level work as a mental health professional in a human services agency
  • Want to increase knowledge of mental health and addiction

When you complete this program, you will know how to:

  • Explain ethical and legal issues in counseling
  • Understand and explain best practices in individual, family, and group therapy
  • Apply knowledge about psychopathology and abnormal behavior related to counseling, guidance, and psychotherapy.
  • Determine counseling needs of mental health patients using diagnostic tools and basic counseling skills
  • Explain the various qualities associated with effective counseling
