  • The EMT provides basic life support care to critically ill or injured patients. EMTs learn to manage an airway using artificial devices, assess the severity of illness or injury, manage wounds and bleeding, immobilize fractures, perform CPR, utilize an automated defibrillator, and a host of other procedures.
  • The clinical portion of this program will provide supervised field internship experience that allow students to practice basic patient assessments and to be exposed to a variety of sick and injured patients while under the direction of qualified instructors.

Once you are working as an EMT, you will be eligible to pursue further education and certification as a paramedic or earn an associate degree as in emergency medical services.

This program is approved by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems.

  • This 16 week  program is for students who want to train to become an EMT. You must be 17 at the start of classes.
  • Students will register for all courses in the program at one time (EMT I, II, III)
  • Additional Costs – $160 for textbooks, $70 for uniforms, and $50-$70 for stethoscope
  • National Registry Cognitive Exam – $98 (per attempt)
  • This is a Pre-requisite for our EMS Programs

General Information

This webpage contains all you need to know about Chesapeake’s EMT program.

No. You can become a Nationally Registered EMT without an affiliation, but Maryland will require it before issuing your Maryland EMT card.

The college offers two EMT classes each year starting in January and August.

Yes. It is a national requirement that all paramedic students be certified as an EMT first (regardless of other medical certifications/licenses).

No. Once the college starts a class it will finish regardless of attrition.

The course is about 16 weeks, but the state and national tests will take an additional 2-3 weeks.

175 hours (not including the online work)

Yes. Upon successful completion, you will become a Nationally Registered EMT and a Maryland certified EMT.

Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6 PM-10 PM) with about five Saturday classes (8:30- 4:00) spread out over the entire class.

The class combines face-to-face instruction with online learning. The online activities can include: video presentations, discussions, practice tests, quizzes, and other projects.

Each face to face class can include lecture, demonstrations, and lab.

This is not required to register for the EMT class, but MIEMSS and/or your employer will require a criminal background check and a drug screening before certification and/or employment.

Registration closes one week prior to the first class. However, we recommend that students register as soon as possible.

  • WIB or grant funding can take a month or more to complete
  • It is easier to afford the college payment plan (if that is needed)
  • Need the textbook prior to the start of class
  • Funding is “first come, first serve”
  • Class size is limited
About $1,395- not including books.

No. This class is non-credit therefore not eligible for federal aid.

The answer is usually “yes,” but it is not guaranteed. WIB and Workforce Sequence Scholarships provide your best opportunity for funding. Find out more on the noncredit scholarship page.
