Applying for financial aid and understanding what to do after receiving your award is crucial to making the most of the resources available to you. This page will guide you through the steps of applying for aid, maintaining eligibility, and what to do once you’ve been awarded financial aid. Follow these steps to stay on track and ensure your college expenses are covered.
Steps for Securing Financial Aid
- Maryland State Scholarships: To be considered, complete your FAFSA by March 1st.
- Chesapeake College Institutional Scholarships: Apply for these scholarships each year by completing the Institutional Scholarship application, which is available by February. You must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
After submitting your FAFSA, you’ll receive a FAFSA Submission Summary, summarizing your application. Review it carefully to ensure all information is correct. You can make any necessary corrections on the FAFSA website or by mailing the updated summary back to the Department of Education (NOT to Chesapeake College).
Monitor your Self Service account in MyCampus — keeping an eye out for any requests from the Financial Aid Office for additional documentation. This is where you will find the latest updates on your aid status and any actions you may need to take.
Some applicants may be required to verify information from their FAFSA. If selected for verification, you’ll need to provide additional documentation to confirm the information on your FAFSA. This is a routine process that helps the Financial Aid Office ensure your financial aid is based on accurate details. You’ll receive an email notification with instructions on what documents are needed, which could include tax returns, W-2 forms, or other financial records. It’s important to respond promptly to avoid any delays in processing your aid.
Sometimes, even after submitting the initial documents, more information may be required, so keep an eye on your email for any follow-up requests. If you or your family experience special circumstances—like a loss of income, high medical expenses, or a death in the household—be sure to notify the Financial Aid Office. Provide a written explanation and any supporting documents so they can reassess your financial situation.
To remain eligible for financial aid, you must meet SAP requirements. If you fail to meet these standards, you may need to submit an appeal to regain eligibility.
After You’ve Been Awarded Financial Aid
If you have accepted your aid and it is sufficient enough to cover your bill, your registration will be secured. If you do not have sufficient aid, ensure your tuition and fees are paid by the due date. If needed, please inquire about the Deferred Payment Plan.
Make sure your financial aid is in place by the payment deadline each semester to hold your courses. If your aid isn’t enough to cover your tuition and fees, you’ll need to pay the balance to avoid having your classes dropped.
Attend New Student Orientation to learn about college resources and policies. This will help you start the semester on the right foot.
To maintain your financial aid, you must actively participate in all your courses. Federal regulations require that your participation is verified throughout the semester. Failure to participate can result in a reduction or loss of financial aid.
If you have remaining financial aid after all charges are paid, you’ll receive a refund. Refund checks will be cut and mailed to the address on file within 10 days of disbursement.
