This continuing education course is designed for individuals pursuing professional development training for non-Spanish-speaking individuals to enable them to communicate with the Spanish community. Instruction will focus on phonetic encoding to address the most important Spanish commands, questions, and phrases. Topics include pronunciation of words, phrases, and functional language dedicated to community life.

PHOTOGRAPHY IN EVERYDAY LIFE
This continuing education course is designed to teach students how to use photography to capture everyday life. Instruction will be given on how to use digital cameras and/or smartphones to confidently take pro-like photos. Topics include camera controls and techniques, exposure and lighting, composition and depth of field, simple photo editing, and discussion about photography and how photographs are important to life.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHY
Caroline J. Phillips is a freelance photographer and filmmaker living in Kent Island, Maryland. When she’s not taking photos, she’s making videos for local businesses and brands. Inspired by the colors and landscape of the Eastern Shore, she loves communicating regional stories through photos and video. She has been teaching photography courses at Chesapeake since 2019.
CAKE DECORATING FOR BEGINNERS
This class begins with the basic fundamentals of decorating and follows with hands-on participation in a variety of cake decorating techniques, including icing preparation, creating borders, adding finishing touches, and more. ADVANCED CAKE DECORATING
Students will learn advanced techniques, such as basket weaving, string work, stacking, and tiering cake constructions. INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: CAKE DECORATING
Karen Callahan grew up in a family of cake decorators; her mom and aunt decorated cakes as well. Karen completed Wilton Beginner and Advanced Cake Decorating classes, and started decorating cakes professionally in 1990 and teaching cake decorating at Chesapeake in 2000. Through Karen’s instruction, students will learn how to bake and decorate the perfect cake. Instruction includes making icing, icing consistency, decorating techniques, making roses, and how to draw designs on a cake.
PICKLEBALL - BEGINNER
This course is designed for beginner players or players who would like a refresher. The key components of the game will be covered including the pickleball serve, volleys, scorekeeping, the double-bounce rule, and player positions. Pickleball perforated polymer balls will be provided. Participants must bring their own paddles. Limited to 15 participants.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: PICKLEBALL, TENNIS, YOGA
Susan Claggett has been teaching Pickleball for 5 years, teaching and practicing yoga for 10 years, and teaching and playing tennis for over 20 years! She loves to exercise and stretch. She believes working on balance in harmony with exercise is good for aging adults. Mostly, she likes to have fun and enjoy every class.
HISTORY OF THE CRUSADES
This course is an introduction to the history and culture of the Crusades. Students will be able to articulate the importance of this historical event, and explain why the Crusades were critical in the development of modern geo political conflicts and the social chasm that exists between the Eastern and Western cultures. Topics include the causes of the Crusades, how the Crusades were waged, and the lasting legacy of the Crusades.

Chesapeake College no longer administers the Institute for Adult Learning, but information about a community-based Institute for Adult Learning can be found at www.instituteforadultlearning.org. The College continues to offer a variety of credit, non-credit, and personal enrichment courses, and welcomes your participation. In addition, we offer programming at area senior centers. Class topics include fitness, music, computers, foreign languages, and art—many familiar to our IAL participants. Chesapeake College’s Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Training now offers classes specifically designed for seniors throughout the five-county area. The classes meet at senior centers and other sites, and offer a variety of subjects. Classes are open to persons over 60 years of age who reside in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, or Talbot counties. Classes are held during the day, and are between one and two hours in duration. Most classes meet once or twice a week and last between 10 to 16 weeks.
Students may register for classes at the sites listed below, or call the activity planner at the site. Not all classes are offered at every site; some counties have restrictions limiting who may attend at certain sites. For information, please email PACE@chesapeake.edu.
